Lost communication with power steering control module
What it means
Another module has stopped receiving messages from the electric power steering control unit.
Symptoms
- Steering warning light
- Steering suddenly heavy (power assistance lost)
- Lane-assist or park-assist functions unavailable
Likely causes, most likely first
| No. | Cause |
|---|---|
| 01 | weak 12V battery or low voltage during cranking |
| 02 | blown high-current power steering fuse |
| 03 | corroded or loose connector at the steering rack/column motor |
| 04 | damaged CAN wiring |
| 05 | failed power steering control unit |
What to check, step by step
- 01If steering becomes heavy, assistance cuts in and out, or a stop warning appears, stop safely and arrange recovery; otherwise arrange prompt diagnosis and establish whether the code is current or historical
- 02Check 12V battery and charging voltage (steering systems are sensitive to low voltage)
- 03Check the power steering main fuse and power/ground at the steering unit
- 04Check whether the steering module answers a scan tool
- 05Inspect connectors at the steering rack or column for water and corrosion
- 06Test CAN wiring before replacing the steering unit
