Lost communication with steering angle sensor module
What it means
The ABS/ESP or another module is not receiving messages from the steering angle sensor, which tells the stability control where the wheels are pointing.
Symptoms
- ESP/traction control warning light
- Stability control switched off
- Sometimes power steering or lane-assist warnings
Likely causes, most likely first
| No. | Cause |
|---|---|
| 01 | steering angle sensor not powered (fuse) or failed |
| 02 | worn clockspring / steering column wiring (sensor is often part of the column switch unit) |
| 03 | loose connector at the steering column after work on the column or airbag |
| 04 | CAN wiring fault |
| 05 | low 12V battery voltage |
What to check, step by step
- 01Check 12V battery and fuses
- 02Check whether the steering angle sensor or column module answers a scan tool
- 03Check connectors at the steering column, especially after recent airbag, clockspring or column work
- 04Test power, ground and CAN at the sensor
- 05After any repair, calibrate the steering angle sensor with a scan tool
