Intake runner (swirl) flap position sensor range/performance bank 1
What it means
Intake manifold runner flaps - called swirl flaps on diesels - change how air enters the cylinders at low rpm. The flap position reported by the sensor does not match what is commanded or expected - often a mechanical problem rather than a sensor fault.
Symptoms
- engine warning light
- sometimes rough idle or reduced power
Likely causes, most likely first
| No. | Cause |
|---|---|
| 01 | worn or broken flap linkage (a known weak point on some VW group petrol and diesel engines) |
| 02 | flaps seized with carbon |
| 03 | failed position sensor or actuator |
| 04 | wiring or connector fault |
What to check, step by step
- 01Check the flap linkage and ball joints for play or breakage.
- 02Watch flap position in live data during the actuator test.
- 03On engines with a history of flap failure, check the flaps for loose screws or play; a flap breaking off into a cylinder can wreck the engine.
- 04Repair the linkage or replace the manifold/actuator; run a flap adaptation if required.
