Intake runner (swirl) flap stuck open bank 1
What it means
Intake manifold runner flaps - called swirl flaps on diesels - change how air enters the cylinders at low rpm. The engine computer sees the bank 1 flaps staying open when commanded closed.
Symptoms
- engine warning light
- slightly rougher idle or more smoke at low rpm
- often no noticeable change
Likely causes, most likely first
| No. | Cause |
|---|---|
| 01 | carbon build-up on flaps and shafts (EGR soot and oil vapour) |
| 02 | failed flap actuator (vacuum or electric) |
| 03 | vacuum leak or faulty control solenoid on vacuum-operated flaps |
| 04 | worn or broken flap linkage |
| 05 | position sensor fault |
What to check, step by step
- 01Run the actuator test and watch the linkage move through full travel.
- 02Check the vacuum hose and solenoid (vacuum type) or the actuator wiring (electric type).
- 03Check the linkage for wear, broken ball joints or seized shafts.
- 04On engines with a history of flap failure, check the flaps for loose screws or play; a flap breaking off into a cylinder can wreck the engine.
- 05Clean or replace the manifold/actuator; some cars need a flap adaptation afterwards.
