Replace hybrid/EV battery pack
What it means
The battery controller has detected a traction-battery performance or block-imbalance condition meeting its replacement threshold. Confirm the cause with model-specific tests: cooling or voltage-sensing faults can contribute, so the code alone is not a completed battery diagnosis.
Symptoms
- Hybrid system warning light
- Engine runs more often, fuel economy drops
- Battery charge gauge swings quickly between full and empty
- Reduced power
Likely causes, most likely first
| No. | Cause |
|---|---|
| 01 | ageing high-voltage battery with one or more weak cells/modules (common on older Toyota/Lexus hybrids) |
| 02 | blocked or dirty battery cooling fan or air intake (often under or beside the rear seat) |
| 03 | corroded bus bars or connections inside the battery pack |
| 04 | battery voltage sensor or battery ECU fault (less common) |
What to check, step by step
- 01Save all battery codes, subcodes and freeze-frame data; review the OEM test procedure and applicable service bulletins
- 02Check battery cooling airflow, intake/filter and fan operation or the specified liquid-cooling system
- 03Compare block voltages and temperatures under the specified test conditions, together with capacity or resistance data where available
- 04Have a high-voltage qualified technician check suspect sensing wiring and pack connections using the OEM isolation procedure
- 05Choose an OEM-approved repair or replacement only after confirming the failure and overall pack condition; voltage spread alone is insufficient
