OBD-II · Engine and powertrain (P)
P0087
Fuel rail/system pressure too low
What it means
The ECU sees fuel pressure below the requested value, often under load. It applies to both diesel common-rail and petrol direct-injection engines.
Symptoms
- reduced power or limp mode
- hesitation, jerking or misfire under load
- long cranking or hard starting
- engine may stall
- engine warning light
Likely causes, most likely first
| No. | Cause |
|---|---|
| 01 | clogged fuel filter |
| 02 | weak in-tank (low-pressure) fuel pump |
| 03 | worn high-pressure pump (on petrol direct injection, also a worn pump cam follower) |
| 04 | faulty pressure regulator or fuel volume control valve |
| 05 | air in the fuel lines (diesel) or running very low on fuel |
| 06 | faulty rail pressure sensor |
What to check, step by step
- 01Make sure there is enough fuel and read commanded versus actual rail pressure in live data under load
- 02Check low-pressure supply to the high-pressure pump (pressure and flow) and the fuel filter
- 03On diesels, look for air in the clear fuel lines and check injector leak-off
- 04Check the pressure regulator or volume control valve and its wiring
- 05Validate the rail sensor electrically using OEM data; any independent high-pressure measurement requires specified, pressure-rated workshop equipment. Depressurise as specified before opening the system; never use an ordinary fuel-pressure gauge on the high-pressure rail.
