Lost communication with airbag (restraints) control module
What it means
Another module (usually the instrument cluster) is not receiving messages from the airbag control unit, so the airbag system's status is unknown.
Symptoms
- Airbag warning light on
- Seat belt warning may not work correctly
- Passenger airbag status light may be wrong
Likely causes, most likely first
| No. | Cause |
|---|---|
| 01 | weak 12V battery or battery disconnected with ignition on |
| 02 | blown airbag module fuse |
| 03 | loose or corroded airbag module connector (module usually under the centre console) |
| 04 | water ingress under the centre console |
| 05 | failed airbag module or collision damage to its power supply, wiring or electronics |
What to check, step by step
- 01Check the 12V battery and specified airbag module fuses; save the full vehicle scan
- 02Check whether the airbag module communicates and read its own codes if accessible
- 03Before disturbing the module or connectors, follow the OEM SRS disable procedure and reserve-energy wait time
- 04Inspect for water and connector damage; have an SRS-trained technician test only the specified power, ground and communication circuits using the OEM procedure, never probing inflator circuits
- 05If crash data or deployment faults are present, follow the model-specific post-collision replacement and programming instructions; use a reset only when explicitly allowed by the manufacturer
