EGR system performance
What it means
The EGR system is not changing intake conditions the way the engine computer expects. Diesels usually judge this from the air-mass meter reading as EGR opens and closes.
Symptoms
- engine warning light
- possibly reduced power (limp mode)
- rough idle or hesitation
- more smoke than usual
Likely causes, most likely first
| No. | Cause |
|---|---|
| 01 | carbon-clogged EGR valve, cooler or passages |
| 02 | sticking EGR valve |
| 03 | air-mass meter fault |
| 04 | intake or boost leak |
| 05 | EGR cooler bypass stuck |
What to check, step by step
- 01Read live data: EGR position and air mass while EGR opens and closes.
- 02Check the air-mass meter readings against specification.
- 03Smoke-test the intake and boost system for leaks.
- 04Remove and inspect the EGR valve; clean or replace.
- 05Check EGR cooler and bypass flap.
