P0524
Engine oil pressure too low
What it means
The ECU measures oil pressure below the minimum for the engine speed. Stop the engine: running without enough oil pressure can destroy the bearings, turbo and timing chain within minutes.
Symptoms
- red oil pressure warning light
- ticking or knocking from the engine
- engine warning light
Likely causes, most likely first
| No. | Cause |
|---|---|
| 01 | low oil level (leak or oil consumption) |
| 02 | wrong oil grade or oil overdue for change |
| 03 | fault in the variable (two-stage) oil pump control |
| 04 | blocked oil pickup strainer (sludge) |
| 05 | worn oil pump or engine bearings |
| 06 | faulty oil pressure sensor giving a false low reading |
What to check, step by step
- 01Stop the engine and check the oil level; do not drive until the cause is known
- 02Check the oil condition and grade, and for fuel or coolant in the oil
- 03Measure the real oil pressure with a mechanical gauge
- 04Check the variable oil pump control valve and wiring where fitted
- 05If pressure is really low, inspect the oil pickup strainer, pump and bearings
